History
The Peetham traces an unbroken line of Jagadgurus from Adi Shankaracharya, with Sureshvaracharya as the first Acharya of the seat.
The 36th Jagadguru, Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, received sannyasa from his guru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji (35th) on 11 November 1974 and assumed the Peetham in 1989. On 23 January 2015 he initiated Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati as his successor-designate, who will be the 37th Jagadguru.
