Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya

The eternal reviver of Sanatana Dharma

Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, Vedic scholar and the foremost teacher of Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism). Born in Kalady, Kerala, to Shivaguru and Aryamba, he showed extraordinary intellect as a child. He left home young and went to the banks of the Narmada, where he became the disciple of Guru Govinda Bhagavatpada and mastered the Vedic scriptures.

In a short life he wrote commentaries (Bhashyas) on the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, brought the many streams of Hindu worship together, and revived Sanatana Dharma across the subcontinent.

The four Amnaya Peethams

To keep the Vedas and Sanatana Dharma alive for all time, he founded four cardinal monastic seats, the Amnaya Peethams, at the four corners of India, and placed one of his four chief disciples at the head of each. Each seat was entrusted with one Veda, and the Guru-Shishya Parampara he began continues unbroken today.

Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham in Tamil Nadu also traces its foundation to Adi Shankaracharya by its own tradition. Read the profile
